the original art of Jan Quinn Jan is a constructionist and reshaper of things. Her art is created out of the old stuff she finds along her life's path. She transforms these echoes of the past into an art form that expresses a deep sense of personal history and a rich mythological spirituality. As she says, "it is my intention to reveal through these cultural artifacts a universal story as new as tomorrow and old as the beginning of time." Quinn's work has been regularly featured in ThirdStone shows for a number of years an her work is now in many collections throughout the country.

Quinn's
artist statement: I use mythology as my own religion, instinct in the invisible, the layer of psyche where biology and spirit might touch, the world between two worlds. Rusty bottle caps reveal faces and begin to tell me a story. What intrigues me most are the beauty, form and memory in an object, not it's function. By looking closely at the colors, shapes, and textures soul is revealed as though it had been hidden under well-oiled functioning. I often start with just two elements, as the anticipation of a narrative is about to unfold. What results is a visual tapestry of information creating a dialog that is universal. As I look around my studio I am surrounded by echoes of the past. I constantly search for a supply of objects and images that yearn for a "home". We all have our own personal history, moments of grace, tragedy, and wisdom. It is my intention to reveal through these cultural artifacts a universal story as new as tomorrow and old as the beginning of time. We will find ourselves entering yet another attitude, another manner of seeing, as well as discovering and accomplishing the tasks of consciousness. I reside on Avenue of the
Arts in Grand Rapids, Michigan with my partner Richard Jeltes
who is also an artist. All the assemblages are a collaboration.
With out his help my stories could not be told. I am forever
grateful for his love and support. Between us we have lots of
"moving parts", 5 children and 4 grandchildren."
